A lot of tourists arrange these 1 day trips with an agency, which brings them from Chiang Mai to the Golden Triangle and the area around. I reckon, they more or less have to do it like this, as of their limited and tight timeframe. Not so me, I still have more than 3 months to go. I therefore decided to travel the Golden Triangle and the area around by myself for a couple of days. And because the Golden Triangle describes the borderline between Thailand, Laos and Myanmar (which are the countries I will be traveling to next), it is even on my way.
My guide book was speaking about a place called Mae Salong, which is hidden behind a mountain range in the very north of Thailand. It was furthermore recommended to make a day trip to Tha Ton, about 50 km southwest. For this reason I rented a motorbike from my guesthouse, which cost me for one day about 5 EUR. The landscape I drove through was very scenic. The road was winding and it went up- and downhill all the time.
