Today is November 28, 2005. I am sitting here in a Chinese-owned Internet café in Mae Sai. When I look out of the window I can see the Mae Sai river, which describes the borderline between Myanmar to its north and Thailand to its south. I can furthermore see a bridge that connects those two countries, which connects the towns of Tachilek, Myanmar, with Mae Sai, Thailand.
Tomorrow, on November 29, 2005, I am going to cross this bridge, and with it to leave Thailand for the first time and to enter Myanmar. A few minutes later I will step into a different world, into Myanmar – a very contentious country.
As a tourist in Myanmar you can only visit touristic spots. For instance, it is not permitted to travel overland from Tachilek to the inner Myanmar, the touristic area. I will therefore try to get a flight from Tachilek to an inner country destination. In case I can get a flight I am planning to travel in Myanmar for like 10 to 14 days. But if there is no flight I might leave the country after one day already.
The attached picture shows you ones more the area around the Golden Triangle which I traveled with that motorbike yesterday. The Golden Triangle, an island between the rivers, itself I have not seen so far, but will do so on my way to Laos. But first I have to come back from Myanmar...
